Hero Snow

Every snowboarder at some point in their shred lifetime, dreams of getting to shred their home mountain with one of their favorite pros. For me this dream came true last Saturday. I got to shred the whole epic sunny pow day with the legendary Todd Schlosser. Many of you youngsters probably don’t remember this guy, but if you rode a snowboard back in the 90′s you certainly do. Wow I just said back in the 90′s, I guess I’m getting old! Anyways, Todd to me then was like Travis Rice, Nicolas Muller, or Shaun White is to kids today. He was one of the top guys, pushing what was possible on a snowboard, and showing us how it’s done. His monster hip jump session in Mack Dawgs “Upping the Ante” was undoubtedly a redefinition of going big at that time. I started shredding in 1993, so almost every video that came out in my first 4 Years of shredding, from Mack Dawg to Standard films, had a Todd Schlosser segment. These were the videos that I would throw in the VCR daily to get pumped to go shred. Years later I would every once and a while see him shredding at Mt Baker in the spring, throwing Switch bs 720′s off of the hidden wave jump. Back when Switch 7′s were insane! I always admired Todd. And especially so coming from Washington, he was a big part of my NW snowboarding pride. Right up there with Jamie, Peter, Craig, and of course Steven Pass local Matt Goodwill.
Over the last few years I have had the pleasure of meeting Todd and getting to know him. We used a few tracks of his Band “The Senate Arcade” in snowboard movies I have been a part of making in the past. He’s such a nice and humble guy, always full of positive energy. We talked about linking up this year to ride but it just never really happened. We both have kids and a hectic schedule so timing never worked out. But with this freak April dump, and both of us free on the same day, the stars finally lined up and it was on!
A sunny day with bottomless powder is what we had to work with. I could not have asked for a better day to shred with one of my heroes. We started out our day with dropping many of the big cliffs Stevens Pass has to offer. Our first run started with a good 45 footer to pinpoint spine landing. Great way to start the day, and to share it with Todd was insane. “Bitchin” to put it in Todd’s words. It was drops all morning. We even jumped of one of the biggest drops side by side, doubles line! After we had each logged about 200 ft of free fall air by 11am, it was time to build a booter! Pretty much topping off this already “Bitchin” day with the perfect afternoon. We dusted off an old classic, “the power line gap”. Not much shoveling and a whole lot of fun! After a sweet session on the jump, our day was complete and we were in the lodge talking about snowboarding in the 90′s over some beers. Not a bad day for the old guns. For me its days like this that will stand out in my memory forever. I got to shred the rad with one of my heroes, and I didn’t even have to win some sweepstakes prize to do it! A “bitchin” experience for sure, thanks Todd!
