Q&A:
Can you tell us a little bit about the new art piece you created for the upcoming 0809 Travis Rice model?
Its based on an idea that Travis had to integrate shots and messages, into a painting about the hydrological cycle in his new film, combined with the process of making a board from scratch and then riding it.
How was your trip Down Under last summer?
I had a blast, best thing that happened is i got 2 heli days with the boys and got to watch them film and ride a little. Its just amazing down there. oh yea, there was this one night at snowpark with whole crew when we really caused some damage in the lodge and travis created his masterpiece sculpture, i don't think i'll elaborate any further than that though.
What was your best day of shredding this last season?
My best day last season was for sure jan 21st at jackson hole. I flew in from prague for the natural selection with Marek and Iva, my best friends from czech and i got to ride Jackson pow for the first time in ten years. amazing day, amazing feeling and amazing friends.
What Lib Snowboard did you ride mostly?
I'm all about the skunk ape 62, that board is simply made for me.
Do you ever sell your art? If so how would someone get their hands on some?
I do actually, sometimes I do my own showings, nothing fancy, but the easiest way to get something from me is just to ask. I like doing commissions, so just ask. As lame as it sounds, find me on facebook.
What mediums do you prefer to use?
It seems that each piece commands its own medium but i use pretty much everything,
mainly oils and acrylics.
What other artist from past and present inspire you, do you admire?
Even though I don't take from it for my own work much, I'm really admiring the old masters alot these days. Francis Bacon has always blown my mind as well as the amount of work that Dali did. In recent days the warholeske japanese pop art of Murakami gives me a crazy feeling. There is also so much crazy graphic design going down from countless people that I wont even try to name.
Have you ever gotten in trouble for a painting or drawing?
Not yet, but back in the day the first graphic I did for burton was a terje pro-model, I wrote Lib in the clouds and sent it to them, the next day I got spooked and called them saying I didn't like what I had painted and I sent them a replacement before they noticed.
Why are snowboards good places for art?
Because it has an effect on the rider who stands on it. If you feel something from the shit under your feet and it gives you energy, then I am all for being able to be the one to give that energy to the universe and the rider.
What’s your favorite snowboard graphic?
The MC from 92-93, the VW-bus, then the MC bmx the next year. I would ride this as my only board if I had one still. Of my own graphics I would have to say the Emmagator #1–red Tetons.
What inspires you?
Simple things, beautiful girls, travel, synchronicity and lovely weather.
What’s your painting process, 9 to 5 or all nighters?
Every second there is, but I love the silence of the after-midnight hours.
When and where was your first snowboard experience?
1988 Snow Summit, I got a free lesson from Tom Sims, he taught me my first turn/slide. It was on a Back Hill 155 the rare blue one.
Didn’t you used to build parks?
Yes, by hand... that was back in the days when I had to talk to the cat ‘cause they didn’t even trust us to be driving them. I often think of doing it again ‘cause I have some crazy ass ideas that would freak some fools out. It would be fun.
