They say that Jesse Burtner is the hardest working man in snow biz, but he is more than that. He is still, in many respects, the same amped grom I met more than a decade ago just trying to score a ride up to Steven Pass. But now he makes ill movies and ill moves to put in them. High fives for JB." ~Jeff Galbraith
Q&A
How was your summer?
Summer has been hectic, fall is my summer, looking forward to it!
Which board have you been riding this season? Any other Lib product?
I ride the Burtner Box Scratcher 151 and the 157 most, sometimes the 147. I ride the helmet, the goggles and all of the outerwear, it's all good. Put it on and go. And of course I ride Bent Metal bindings for perfect execution.
Where are you calling home base this season?
Seattle and all over the NW, second home Hakuba Japan.
What are you looking forward to this winter?
All these contests with Krush, the tour de Krush. It's fun to be back at resorts interacting with real kids in snowboarding. Also looking forward to finding that Moby Dick video part, it's out there.
What is the first trip you have planned this fall?
Practice session in BC with Jess Kimura. Just learn tricks, no pretense. And then Bone Zone in Utah, same thing but maybe a little more pretense.
Who do you look up to in snowboarding?
So many people. Anyone who has made it by making snowboarding their life, job and passion.
Do you have a crew?
Pika, Geno, Bear-claw, Sleepy, Ross-p, Yosh, Larson, Gus-mah and all of Think Thank.
How would you describe your riding style?
I try and ride freely, I try to have very few mental barriers on what snowboarding should and can be.
Do you have any snowboarding superstitions or habits?
The usual, never call last run and knock on wood. Then when the bad times come I just except them as payment on past mistakes. We call that "snowboard hell", when it finds you, you just have to ride it out, wait for it to pass, like a muscle cramp.
What trick is the most fun for you?
I like a flip trick session in the spring, feels like skateboarding and usually will be the most difficult thing I do all year, so when I land it's super rewarding. I also like tail grabs.
Where is your favorite place to snowboard?
Probably Japan, it's magical.
What videos did you film with this season?
Think Thank "Ransack Rebellion."
Who are you filming with this coming season?
Think Thank and a two year project, TBA.
What is the most radical banana riding you've ever done?
At Boxes For Days in Japan when the kids kept putting banana peels on the box. I slipped.
Do you prefer short, wide, or big bananas?
Just a good fit, that's all I ask for.
What trick have you been hoping to get on your banana but haven't quite nailed yet?
Triple scoop.
Are you competing in any contests this coming season?
Dew Tour, X Games, Olympics, US Open and Shakedown are all a big deal, but I won't be in any of those. I'll be at all the Feeeders and The Down Town Throw Downs and Boxes For Days and Green Horn Games, but the only contest I'll compete in is probably Tube City, the major is corrupt!
Will you be racing in the Legendary Banked Slalom this year? Who do you think will win?
No, Temple (Edgers close second).
What are some of your other hobbies?
When not avulsion fracturing my knee I enjoy skateboarding and my new found love down hill mountain biking. As well as hanging with the Pika as much as possible.
What would you say is the best part about riding for Lib Tech?
Good people making amazing product for the right reasons. Planetary alignment.
Last words?
Thanks!
